Once children begin school, they are constantly busy. Homework, extracurricular activities and school sports take up much of their time. Many children spend a lot of time alone playing video and computer games, because there may not be a safe outdoor area for them to meet and play with friends.

One way to give children a break from routine, is a traditional summer camp. Traditional summer camps offer a variety of activities including hiking, crafts and sports. Some offer swimming, canoing and even horse back riding.

Some traditional summer camps may have a theme that is religious or sports oriented like baseball and football camps,. Others simply offer the same old fashioned activities that generations of children have enjoyed. For younger children there are day camps where the children sleep at home each night. Older children and teens can chose from residential camps with lodges, cabins or dorms for sleeping.

Many outdoor activities are offered and ins some cases traditional summer camps may offer lessons in swimming, tennis, horse back riding and other sports. In areas with special environments, like deserts or salt marshes, many camps offer special studies of the local flora and fauna. This is often done in an outdoor setting rather than a classroom and it gives children a chance to observe nature rather than simply learn about it.

You may wonder if you child really needs summer camp. Look at your child when he is outdoors interacting with friends, it is a different, freer attitude than when indoors. Whether you child is young, or a teenager he can benefit from the experience of a traditional summer camp. If you are not sure how to locate the right camp, there is a great online resource, CampPage.com. This sight allows you to search camps by area and any other criteria you wish.
