Summer day camps are a tradition in the United States. For over 140 years, the camps have been the destination for many kids once school is out for the summer. Many of these camps have added new activities for the benefit of their campers, but the purpose remains to be intact – to prepare the children into becoming more productive and healthy adults through the use of fun games, nature study, camp crafts, and outdoor adventure.

The traditional setting for summer day camps is woodsy and very much outdoorsy, so that the campers can enjoy a lot of hiking, canoeing, or campfires. While these are still incorporated in many camps, about 75 percent of camps have already changed their programs to include new activities. A lot of specialized activities that have been added especially for older campers. These activities include a wide range of skills training in performing arts, computers, or language learning. Special day camps also offer weight loss programs. There also are camps intended for children with special needs.

With about 10 million children attending camp every year, there is no wonder why the number of camps have grown to about 12,000 nationwide. Parents often depend on these camps to look after their children during the school break.

Summer day camps provide a venue for further developing every child’s life skills. Inside the camp the young campers are given the opportunity to socialize and make new friends, as well as build their own characters as they discover what truly is interesting for them.
