Like many adults you may have attended summer camp when you were a child or teenager. Most of us have happy memories of swimming, hiking, canoeing and campfires. After months of school and homework, and a winter of computer games and indoor activities, summer is a great time for kids to get back to basics and get some exercise and low tech fun at a traditional summer camp.

Many families chose to vacation at theme parks and fancy resorts which are great fun, but they don’t offer the same experience that can be had at a good summer camp. Resorts are exciting but lack the physicality and sense of accomplishment offered campers. Today’s children don’t spend enough time outdoors involved in physical activities. A traditional summer camp gives them the opportunity to try new things and stretch physically as well as mentally.

camp-campfireAt summer camp there are opportunities to hike and view nature close up, something many children living in the city or suburbs never have a chance to do. Bike riding and canoeing offer fun and great exercise. The quiet excitement of sitting around a campfire and singing is a new experience to many modern children who are accustomed to getting their music on an MP3 player. Cooking hot dogs and roasting marshmallows on an open fire is thrilling for children who are used to heating food in a microwave.

The traditional summer camp experience offers a different social setting than schools or other organized activities. The children spend all of their time with other children of a similar age and they are encouraged to interact with one another. This kind of interaction isn’t possible in a classroom. Traditional summer camps also encourage children to develop a sense of responsibility for themselves and their fellow campers. Learning new skills gives a sense of accomplishment and pride.

Whether you have young children and chose a day camp, or older children or teens and chose a residential camp, consider a traditional summer camp for your children. Remember how much you enjoyed summer camp? Share this unique experience with your children.
